Hair fall is a common problem for a human being. It’s a process of regrowing hair. Normally people can lose 50 to 100 hairs every day without any reason. Plus, when hair is washed people can lose 250 strands. Mostly 25% men loose hair or start as baldy at the age of thirty, where women lose there at the age 50-60.
It won’t be seen as a matter of worry until suddenly you are losing hair constantly more than necessary or your hair is falling like you are going to be bald in one night. Hair fall can happen for many reasons. For that first we need to know about ‘THE THREE DIFFERENT CYCLE OF HAIR GROWTH’:
- Catagen &
Anagen: this kind of hair last from 2-8 years and 90 hairs of our head is anagen. It’s a growth phase too.
Catagen: It’s a transitional phase. This last not more than 2-3 weeks.
Telogen Cycle: In this stage hair last for 2-4 months, where hair rest.
For most people, hair grows up to 6” inches every year. Most of the hair on the scalp is seen on growing over a time but only 10% are seen in transitory or resting phase.
But the things which interfere with cycles are infections, medicine, therapy, illness etc.
What to do to determine the cause of hair loss
When a patient comes with a concern of hair loss, some diagnosis can be made to identify what’s the main cause of hair loss. For example, testing Preliminary blood work can be tested to make sure thyroid gland and immune system. Because these are the main reason is held as hair fall.
Reasons for hair fall
There are so many reasons for hair fall. One of the main reasons for hair fall is heredity. Other reasons are medication, lichen planus, FPHL, MPB, drugs, trauma & so on. To understand the reason of your hair loss, some of the reasons are described below:
- Hereditary :
About 50% people get their hair fall problem from their family. Rogers from the America Academy of Dermatology said that the number of the heredity in American women is over 30 million. Normally it happens in the late 50s or 60s but it can occur at any time, even at teenage too.
- Medical history:
If your hair is all of a sudden and the number of a strand is more than usual then the condition is needed to identify by medical treatment.
Pregnancy, thyroid disorder, anemia are known as the common reason of hair fall. Besides, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), autoimmune diseases, psoriasis & seborrheic dermatitis (which are known as skin conditions) are also responsible for hair loss.
- Easy Regular task:
Some regular task done by us with hair can also cause the hair fall. Maybe we are doing this for fashion or unintentionally but it is causing serious damage to hair. Roberts of American Academy of Dermatology said that too much brushing hair, using dyes, blow dry after the bath, tight braid, ironing hair etc. can damage and breakage hair badly.
This also adds using too much ammonia in hair while wet & towel drying aggressively too.
- Telogen Effluvium:
It’s a state which occurs after extreme stress, dramatic weight loss, pregnancy & major surgery. Where you can shed a hand full hair every day. It can be critical or chronic. Dr. Marc Glashofer explains, a dermatologist in New York City –“When people have a really stressful event, it can shock the hair cycle, (pushing) more hair into the shedding phase.” Telogen Effluvium can also be a side effect of certain medication of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, beta-blocker, and an antidepressant.
In this state, hair stretches faster than normal from its growing phase into the resting or telogen state. Women will observe this hair loss 6 weeks to 3 months.
- Taking Too much vitamin A:
According to the American Academy of Dermatology-taking too much vitamin A-containing supplement or medication can cause hair loss’’.For adults and kids above age 4, the daily value of vitamin A should be 5000 IU(International Units).
Every vitamin can contain 2,500-10,000 IU.
Women suffer mostly from thyroid disease among millions of people. If your body cannot make enough thyroid hormone, then you will have an underactive thyroid disease or hypothyroidism. Again if your body makes
Too many hormones, then you will have an overactive thyroid disease or hyperthyroidism. Thyroid hormone is accountable for everything of our basal metabolic rate—the rate at which body uses to produce oxygen and energy purpose —which is also responsible for the growth of your hair, skin, and nails.
That is why some changes can be noticed in bodily functions when there is a lack of right amount of thyroid hormones.
- Alopecia Areata:
It’s a scalp baldness of small circular or coin size patches, which usually grow back within months. It is an autoimmune disease which causes hair to fall out in small, random patches. The hair loss normally affects the scalp, but it can also be seen any other areas of the body.
Mostly people who often have a family history of other autoimmune disorders, Like- type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, it occurs to them.
- Traction alopecia:
A small or localized hair loss area which caused by constantly repetitive or persistent pulling or traction on hair roots. Ponytails and tight braids can be pulled hard enough on hairs to make them fall out. This stage can be permanent if hair style is not changed.
Trichotillomania is a state where twisting one’s own hair or habitual pulling causes broken-off hairs. The eyelashes and scalp are mostly affected. This often happens for deep stress or psychologist behavior.
- Tinea capitis:
‘Tinea’ means ‘fungal infection’ & ‘capitis’ means ‘head’. In short, it’s a fungal infection of the scalp, which affects school-age children among black African or African-American. These conditions cannot be found in healthy adults. It normally shows broken-off hairs with dermatitis.
Sharing combs or brushes and hats are the main reasons of tinea capitis.
- Lichen Planus:
It is a skin rash that is activated by the immune system. The condition normally clears up by itself within several weeks or months.
It is an STI (sexually transmitted infection) bacteria known as Treponema pallidum. During 2013, According to CDC(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), minimum 56,400 cases of syphilis were filed in the United States. The statistics of Mayo Clinic shows that in the USA the rate of women infected with syphilis has been reducing, where the rate among men, especially homosexual men, has been increasing.
It can appear on your rectum, sexual organs, or inside your mouth with small, painless sore. This sore is defined as a chancre. People often unable to notice it right away. Untreated Syphilis for a long time can cause a major damage to important organs, like the brain and the heart. It increases through direct contact with syphilitic chancres.
- Bamboo Hair (Trichorrhexis Nodosa):
It is a feature of Nether ton’s syndrome, which causes red, flaky skin all over your body. Bamboo Hair is a hair shaft abnormality which causes your hair strands to develop bumps, or nodules and turn into a look similar to the knots as a bamboo stalk. For this reason, hair breaks easily and falls out quickly.
It is a chronic autoimmune disease where one’s own healthy tissues were attacked by the body’s own immune system. About 1.5 million people were affected by the condition and tend to strike women during their pregnancy. People who are suffering from lupus are sensitive to the sun.A rash like a butterfly –shaped is seen over the bridge of the nose, rash on the scalp which causes hair losses, fever, chest pain, swelling eyes, hand & feet, anemia –are the symptoms of lupus.
- Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL):
FPHL is known as androgen tic alopecia, the most common reason for hair loss among women .On the statistics of the American Academy of Dermatology, it is said that over 30 million American women suffer from Female Pattern Hair Loss.
In this condition, hair becomes thin from top and crown of the scalp and starts with a widening through the center hair part.
- Male Pattern Baldness(MPB):
Androgenic alopecia is the most known reason of men hair loses, also named as Male Pattern Baldness. In the statistics of U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM)-over 50% of all men above age 50 will get affected by Male Pattern Baldness.
A family history of baldness or genetics is one of the main cause of MPB.Besides , research also found Androgens, which are male sex hormones to be associated for MPB.It mostly happens with adults, but it can start during teenage also. Genetics from mother side plays a big role for MPB. Normally it follows a classic pattern which creates usually an M-shaped hairline.
According to the statistics of North American Menopause Society-“ 50% of women generally experience some degree of thinning or hair loss before the age of 50, which often creates a worsens situation with menopause”. Bergfeld explains that-“hormones have been supporting hair growth”. “The hair begins to change when estrogen dips.”
- Stress or Trauma
“After a traumatic or stressful event (like loss of a spouse or divorce), a high fever or surgery, suddenly excessive weight loss, you may notice excessive hair shedding several months”- according to the report of Mayo Clinic. Shedding is temporary and normal — but it can be permanent if the stress persists.
- Dieting and Poor Nutrition:
Eating not sufficiently can damage your hair easily.Because the body moves towards its nutritional stores to vital organs like brain and heart — and give away from your hair — if there is a lacking.
Bergfeld says –“Low protein, low vitamin D, low iron stores, and calcium causes hair loss.’’ But to mention that absorbing nutritional supplements won’t full-fill the necessity. Besides, a study also published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology also reveals that ‘’taking excessive levels of supplements can actually cause hair loss and should not be utilized unless there is an actual deficiency.”
You can also keep organic food in your nutrition.
Pregnancy is one of the common reason of hair fall.Because delivering a baby is a type of physical stress that affects hormones sincerely. That’s why Glashofer.says -“Giving birth is pretty traumatic, “Pregnancy-related hair loss is observed naturally after a baby has been delivered rather than actually in the mean time of pregnancy.
It is not permanent; hair will grow after a couple of months.
- Iron deficiency anemia:
Due to lack of sufficient iron deficiency causes the most common type of anemia, which is the common cause of hair fall. Among one in 10 women aged 20 to 49 suffers from anemia. The doctor needed to do a blood test to specify the type of anemia.
Some of the drugs used to beat cancer have severe side effect which is also causing your hair to fall out. Glashofer says. ““Chemotherapy is like a nuclear bomb.It destroys dividing cells fast. Which means cancer cells, but also dividing cells like hair.”
Hair will grow back when chemotherapy will be stopped.
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS):
More than five million women in the United States suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome every year. It begins to begin at the early age of 11.
A hormonal imbalance in which the ovaries creates too many male hormones, like –facial hair growth.PCOS often causes irregular period, infertility, acne, system .cyst on ovaries, hair loss on scalp &more hair any other parts of the body.
